In adding to Linc's advice, I can add what i've learned from my troubleshooting experiences with WD externals and Macs:ġ) The drives come pre-formatted, likely for Windows. Therefore external drives with an independent power supply are better choices for the desktop Mac. If the drive is not getting enough power, it stops working. Desktop computers have lots of demands on their USB bus-printers, mouse and keyboard, etc. Post the results of the test.Ī WD Passport can only get power from the computer's USB bus and is not a good choice for a desktop Mac. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.Īfter testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. You must know your login password in order to log in. The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow. Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.
